Our hearts are heavy with the shooting and killing of yet another person at the hands of our government.

Alex Pretti was not only helping a woman in his last act, he was a committed civil servant – a member of our client, American Federation of Government Employees, and a Veterans Affairs ICU nurse whose life was dedicated to the service and health of people.

There’s been a video circulating of Alex giving a veteran a final salute at his bedside. In it, he said:

“Today, we remember that freedom is not free. We have to work at it, nurture it, protect it and even sacrifice for it. May we never forget and always remember our brothers and sisters who have served, so that we may enjoy the gift of freedom. So in this moment, we remember and give thanks for their dedication and selfless service to our nation in the cause of freedom. In this solemn hour, we render our honor and our gratitude.”

The people of Minneapolis have demonstrated incredible courage and solidarity, closing businesses, protesting in subzero temperatures, organizing food and supply deliveries for their friends and neighbors, and initiating the first general strike in the United States in 80 years. This is courage, community, and hope in action.

This weekend also proved that these actions are not about keeping communities safe – they’re about control.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi penned a damning demand letter to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz that appears to extort the state with an offer to pull federal agents out in exchange for access to state voter rolls – in essence, to potentially interfere with upcoming elections.

This is not the first time we have seen evidence of election interference.

We also saw last week the U.S. Department of Justice made a bombshell filing in another case we are litigating. DOGE officials apparently did remove individual data from the Social Security Administration, withdrawing that data to servers outside the government. And an unauthorized DOGE official signed a voter data agreement with an unidentified third party institution that we believe could be one of the voter denying organizations. We are actively investigating that and pushing for accountability.

What we are seeing unfold in Minnesota is not about immigration or protests, it is about an autocratic power grab. And it looks like they are heading for our elections. That is the work of the next year to resist that and protect our free and fair elections.

On Friday, our CEO Skye Perryman shared that we were exhausted, but not giving up. That is still true: Each passing day shows the stakes of what we’re fighting for – the very essence of our shared democracy and our shared humanity.

We’ll be by your side, and the side of every person in this country fighting for that democracy and that humanity. We’ll see you in the streets, and we’ll see this administration in the courtroom.
